Cauvery issue: Karnataka leaders attend all party meeting in Bengaluru presided by CM Shivakumar
STORY: Leaders across parties arrive to attend all party meeting chaired by CM DK Shivakumar in Bengaluru, on Sunday.
The leaders will be discussing about the state’s legal and political strategy on the Cauvery water-sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu, following the CWRC’s direction to release 3,500 cusecs of water daily for 15 days.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of widespread protests across Karnataka over the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s (CWRC) order on July 30, with the BJP, farmers’ organisations and pro-Kannada groups demanding that no water be released to Tamil Nadu.
Speaking to the reporters BJP leader CT Ravi said, “We are with the state government in this issue and will not play politics. We want to say the government that first we have to secure water for farmers, then we can provide water to the farmers of Tamil Nadu.”
Karnataka state BJP president B Y Vijayendra said that he has written a letter to Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu urging him to resolve the issue amicably with Karnataka government.
Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda had written a letter to the CM expressing support to the state government over its work towards farmers life in Cauvery delta.
Shivakumar deferred his meeting with his Tamil Nadu counterpart, C Vijay Joseph, which was planned on August 3, saying discussions could be held later in a “more conducive and cordial atmosphere.” He had also said the all-party meeting would help evolve a united stand on the state’s legal and political response to the dispute.
