Kollam (Kerala), Aug 3 (PTI) As floodwaters swept across Kerala, they disrupted not only the lives of humans but also those of wild animals.
On Monday, forest officials rescued a deer that was trapped in the rushing waters of the Kumbhavurutty Waterfalls at Achankovil in southern Kollam district.
A video shared on the Kerala Forest Department’s official Facebook page showed the dramatic rescue.
Two forest officials entered the gushing water flow in the rocky terrain and carefully approached the frightened animal before catching hold of it with dexterity.
The deer struggled to free itself from their grip as the current pushed against them, forcing the rescuers to fight both the water and the terrified animal.
After a few tense moments, the officials managed to secure the deer and passed it on to another member of the team waiting on the rocks nearby.
Before the official could check whether it had suffered any injuries, the deer slipped from his hands and bounced away.
It stumbled briefly on the wet, slippery rocks but quickly regained its footing and disappeared into the forest.
The rescue team drew praise from many on social media, though it also sparked a debate over the risks taken by the rescue team.
A Facebook user called Roshan Areekode wrote — “Rescuing the deer is, at first glance, certainly commendable. At the same time, two people risked their lives to carry out the rescue. We need to decide whether greater value should be placed on the life of the animal or the lives of the humans.”
Another user, Sasi Kumar R, offered a different view. “Every life matters. Heartfelt appreciation to the Kerala Forest Department for the courageous rescue of the deer trapped at the Achankovil Kumbhavurutty Waterfalls. Your compassion, dedication and commitment to protecting wildlife deserve our highest respect. Salute to the rescue team,” he wrote.
